Life#
Mehmet Sabri Efendi was born in Niš (Niş) in 1863/64 (AH 1280) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mehmet Sabri began work in Izmir (İzmir) in 1879/80, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 140 kuruş. From 1881/82 to 1895/96 every annual entry places Mehmet Sabri in Izmir, first as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), from 1885/86 in the clerkship of the chief director's office (Başmüdür Kitabeti).
The salary went from 140 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to 400 in 1888/89, the peak, in the Başmüdür Kitabeti in Izmir, when 27 per cent of paid officials earned less.
