Life#
Mehmet Rıza Efendi was born in Izmir (İzmir) in 1859/60 (AH 1276) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Izmir in 1877/78, at about 17, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1879/80 to 1896/97 places Mehmet Rıza in the same office, clerkship of the chief director's office (Başmüdür Kitabeti), in Aydın.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1879/80 to a peak of 675 in 1892/93, in the Başmüdür Kitabeti in Aydın, when 73 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1896/97.
