Life#
Born in Serres (Siroz) in 1859/60 (AH 1276) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Osman Nuri Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Osman Nuri began work in Serres in 1877/78, at about 17, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1879/80, to 1886/87, every annual entry places Osman Nuri in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Sidirokastro (Demirhisar).
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1879/80 to a peak of 500 in 1880/81, as Muhabere Memuru in Sidirokastro, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1886/87.
