Life#
Born in Gelibolu in 1859/60 (AH 1276) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ali Rıza Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Ali Rıza had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 17, in 1877/78, Ali Rıza began work in Gelibolu, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1879/80, with Ali Rıza as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Gelibolu, the birthplace. Ali Rıza then moved to Manisa from 1880 to 1888, then Muğla, Rhodes (Rodos), Arnavutkoy and Kurukavak, four places in five years. From 1893 to 1903 every annual entry places Ali Rıza in Servia (Serfiçe), with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür).
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1879/80 to 800 in 1893/94, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Servia, when four in five paid officials earned less. After the last annual entry, for 1902/03, the list of 1903/04 (AH 1321) gives the status word Vefat (death). An entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl kayıtlarına göre Gelibolu doğumlu memurlar (1879-1909)" by OSMAN UMUT NAL (2026) probably refers to Ali Rıza, since the name, the birthplace, the archive register and page and a place of service agree.
