Life#
Born in Gelibolu in 1856/57 (AH 1273), Kosta Efendi came from the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Kosta also wrote Greek (Rum) and spoke Turkish.
Kosta began work in Istanbul in 1892/93, at about 36, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 2 per cent started at 36 or older. From the first annual entry, for 1895/96, to 1903/04, every annual entry places Kosta in the same post, machine official (Makine Memuru), in Istanbul.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to a peak of 450 in 1903/04, as Makine Memuru in Istanbul, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
