Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1856/57 (AH 1273), Nevrikyan Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a money-changer (sarraf). Nevrikyan had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi), and wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1875/76, at about 18, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1876/77, places Nevrikyan in Yeni camii postanesi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Nevrikyan to Beşiktaş in 1877/78, then Emirgan from 1878 to 1887. Next came Yeniköy from 1887 to 1909. The last posts were in Ortaköy from 1909 to 1911, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür).
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to 800 in 1909/10, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Ortaköy, when two in three paid officials earned less. In all, 36 years of salary come to 208,020 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1910/11.
