Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1856/57 (AH 1273), Osep Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Osep had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi), and wrote Armenian as well as Turkish.
At about 25, in 1881/82, Osep began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1882/83 to 1892/93 places Osep in Istanbul, the birthplace, first as an official of the union post (İttihat Posta Memuru), from 1887/88 in the stamp clerkship (Pul Kitabeti).
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to 500 in 1887/88, the peak, in the Pul Kitabeti in Istanbul, when 41 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1892/93.
