Life#
Born in Yozgat in 1856/57 (AH 1273), Misak Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Misak also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Misak began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Yozgat in 1871/72, at about 15, with ten unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for ten years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1880/81, places Misak in Trabzon as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), where the entries run to 1883/84. Next came a return to Yozgat, the birthplace, from 1884 to 1890, then Komotini (Gümülcine), Leskovik, Karamürsel and Yalova, four places in 14 years, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1892/93. The annual lists then follow Misak to a post with no place named from 1906 to 1911. The last post was in Servia (Serfiçe) in 1911. Six provinces on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 7 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to 800 in 1892/93, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Komotini, when four in five paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1911.
