Life#
Born in Sidon (Sayda) in 1855/56 (AH 1272), İbrahim Hilmi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 17, in 1873/74, İbrahim Hilmi began work in Baalbek, with eight unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. So long an unpaid start was rare; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for eight years or longer. Both annual entries, for 1880/81 and 1881/82, place İbrahim Hilmi in Beirut (Beyrut) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 380 kuruş a month in 1880/81, as Muhabere Memuru in Beirut, when 21 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1881/82.
