Life#
Born in Sidon (Sayda) in 1861/62 (AH 1278), Mehmet Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Sidon in 1873/74, at about 12, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Few began so young; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 12 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1876/77, with Mehmet as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Tripoli (Trablusşam), where the entries run to 1879/80. Mehmet then moved to Beirut (Beyrut) and Jerusalem (Kudüs) from 1880 to 1884, then back to Beirut from 1884 to 1892. The last post was in Edhemiye in 1892/93, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to 545 in 1883/84, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Jerusalem, when 57 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 380 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1892/93.
