Life#
Mustafa Halit Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1860/61 (AH 1277), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "Sultan turbedari". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 15, in 1875/76, Mustafa Halit began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. From 1876/77 to 1881/82 every annual entry places Mustafa Halit in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), from 1879/80 in the collections office (Tahsilat Kalemi).
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to 142 in 1879/80, the peak, in the Tahsilat Kalemi in Istanbul, when 3 per cent of paid officials earned less.
