Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1860/61 (AH 1277), Andon Yaldızyan Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was an official (memur). Schooling took four years, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi); Andon Yaldızyan also wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.
At about 14, in 1874/75, Andon Yaldızyan began work in Istanbul, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1878/79, places Andon Yaldızyan in Bitola (Manastır) as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). The annual lists then follow Andon Yaldızyan to Pristina (Priştine), Thessaloniki (Selanik), Beyoğlu and Edirne, four places in five years, then back to Pristina from 1885 to 1887. Andon Yaldızyan then moved to Babi seraskeri and Beyoğlu from 1887 to 1890. From 1890 to 1906 every annual entry places Andon Yaldızyan in Kadıköy. Fewer than 10 per cent of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more kept one title throughout.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1878/79 to 800 in 1885/86, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Pristina, when 77 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl defterlerine göre İstanbul doğumlu Ermeni devlet adamları" by HARUN TUNCA (2016) probably refers to Andon Yaldızyan, since the name and the birthplace agree.
