Life#
Born in Niš (Niş) in 1865/66 (AH 1282) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Salih Efendi was the child of a police official (zaptiye memuru). Mehmet Salih had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1886/87, at about 21, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1886/87 to 1900/01 places Mehmet Salih in Kadıköy, first as a deliverer (Müvezzi), from 1893/94 as a postal official (Posta Memuru).
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1886/87 to a peak of 400 in 1900/01, as Posta Memuru in Kadıköy, when 31 per cent of paid officials earned less.
