Life#
Mehmet Efendi was born in Erzincan in 1844/45 (AH 1260), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Mehmet began work in Ergani in 1870/71, at about 26, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1870/71, with Mehmet in the Magralar Kitabeti in Ergani, where the entries run to 1872/73. The lists have no entry for 1873 to 1878. Mehmet then moved to Ivazkoyu, Bakırköy and Hadımköy from 1878 to 1884, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1878. From 1884 to 1904 every annual entry places Mehmet in Kadıköy, first as Muhabere Memuru, from 1900/01 as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür).
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1870/71 to 800 in 1900/01, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Kadıköy, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 29 years the salaries add up to 195,480 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
