Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1855/56 (AH 1272), Mustafa Daim Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Berber". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1871/72, Mustafa Daim began work in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. From 1874/75 to 1905/06 every annual entry places Mustafa Daim in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the office of the corresponding secretary (Mektubi Kalemi), from 1875/76 in the dispatch office (Sevk Kalemi), from 1878 as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) and from 1903/04 as Sevk Kalemi Mudur Muavini. A career like this is rare; 11 per cent of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more stayed in one place throughout.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1874/75 to a peak of 1,200 in 1902/03, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when 91 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 32 years of salary come to 261,420 kuruş, 1.3 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
