Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1855/56 (AH 1272) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hafiz Ali Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Ali had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in the Rusumat Kalemi in Istanbul in 1874/75, at about 18, on a first salary of 200 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1878/79 to 1887/88 places Ali in the same office, Tatbik Kalemi, in Istanbul, the birthplace. The lists give Vefat (death) for 1888/89 instead of a title.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1878/79 to a peak of 300 in 1883/84, in the Tatbik Kalemi in Istanbul, when 12 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over ten years the salaries add up to 30,120 kuruş, 49 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The list of 1888/89 (AH 1306) gives the status word Vefat (death).
