Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1855/56 (AH 1272), Hasan Basri Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hasan Basri also attended the telegraph school.
Work began in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Istanbul in 1874/75, at about 18, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1876/77, places Hasan Basri in Sofia (Sofya) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Pristina (Priştine), Kırklareli and Izmir (İzmir) from 1877 to 1881. From 1881 to 1895 the annual entries place Hasan Basri in Ödemiş, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
The salary went from 500 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to 600 in 1878/79, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Kırklareli, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1894/95; the list of 1895/96 (AH 1313) gives the status word Vefat (death).
