Life#
Born in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1855/56 (AH 1272) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Sait Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Mehmet Sait began work in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1872/73, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1876/77, with Mehmet Sait as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Amarah (Amare). Mehmet Sait then moved to Khanaqin (Hanikin), Baghdad and Kirkuk (Kerkük) from 1878 to 1881, then back to Baghdad from 1881 to 1894, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru). The last posts were in Najaf in 1894/95, as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür) and Baghdad again in 1895/96.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to a peak of 1,000 in 1894/95, as 2. Müdür in Najaf, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 900 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1895/96.
Places in order of time#
