Life#
Mehmet Salih Efendi was born in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1852/53 (AH 1269) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a soldier (asker). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mehmet Salih began work in Baghdad in 1871/72, at about 18, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1873/74, places Mehmet Salih in Ramadi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1875/76. Next came Amarah (Amare), Kirkuk (Kerkük) and Basra from 1876 to 1881, then a return to Baghdad, the birthplace, from 1881 to 1905. The last post was in Hillah (Hille) in 1905/06, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür).
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1873/74 to a peak of 655 in 1905/06, as 2. Müdür in Hillah, when 72 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 34 years the salaries add up to 181,680 kuruş, 87 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
