Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1852/53 (AH 1269), Ali Tevfik Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Work began in Istanbul in 1870/71, at about 17, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 120 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1873/74, with Ali Tevfik as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Istanbul, the birthplace. Ali Tevfik then moved to Nova Zagora (Yeni Zağra), Babi seraskeri, Ayvatas, Çorlu and Beykoz, five places in 11 years, then back to Istanbul from 1885 to 1889. Next came Taif from 1889 to 1892. The last posts were in Az Zaydiyah (Zeydiye) from 1892 to 1896, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür). The farthest post, Az Zaydiyah, lay about 3,150 km from Istanbul, and fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace. Few officials served in as many provinces; fewer than 7 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
The salary went from 120 kuruş a month in 1873/74 to 900 in 1892/93, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Az Zaydiyah, when 85 per cent of paid officials earned less. After the last annual entry, for 1895/96, the list of 1896/97 (AH 1314) gives the status word Vefat (death).
