Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1851/52 (AH 1268), Hasan Tahsin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a trader of the covered market (bedestani). Hasan Tahsin had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in the Maliye Kalemi in Istanbul in 1868/69, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1873/74 to 1906/07 places Hasan Tahsin in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), from 1874/75 in the dispatch office (Sevk Kalemi). Only 11 per cent of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more stayed in one place throughout.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1873/74 to a peak of 480 in 1903/04, in the Sevk Kalemi in Istanbul, when half the paid officials earned less. Over 35 years the salaries add up to 150,240 kuruş, 70 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
