Life#
Ahmet Nazif Efendi was born in Edirne in 1851/52 (AH 1268) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Edirne in 1869/70, at about 17, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1875/76, with Ahmet Nazif as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Edirne, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1878/79. The lists have no entry for 1879 to 1891. The annual lists then follow Ahmet Nazif to Didymoteicho (Dimetoka) from 1891 to 1893. The last posts were in Edirne again from 1893 to 1896. A career like this is rare; fewer than 10 per cent of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more kept one title throughout.
