Life#
Ahmet Ziya Efendi was born in Kütahya in 1851/52 (AH 1268) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 15, in 1866/67, Ahmet Ziya began work in Kastamonu, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1869/70, places Ahmet Ziya in Kastamonu as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Karadeniz Ereğli in 1870/71, then Akçakoca (Akçaşehir) from 1871 to 1880. Ahmet Ziya then moved to Çankırı from 1880 to 1885, then Çerkeş in 1885/86. The annual lists then follow Ahmet Ziya to Boyabat from 1886 to 1897. The last posts were in Kastamonu again from 1897 to 1904, first as an acting director (Müdür Vekili), from 1898/99 as Muhabere Memuru.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to a peak of 625 in 1897/98, as Müdür Vekili in Kastamonu, when three in four paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 475 kuruş. In all, 36 years of salary come to 199,800 kuruş, 89 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
