Life#
Mustafa Hamdi Efendi was born in Kastamonu in 1842/43 (AH 1258) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Mustafa Hamdi began work in Kastamonu in 1865/66, at about 23, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1869/70, places Mustafa Hamdi in Kastamonu, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Mustafa Hamdi to Samsun, Taşköprü and Kastamonu from 1870 to 1874. The last posts were in Kalecik from 1874 to 1878.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to a peak of 600 in 1874/75, as Muhabere Memuru in Kalecik, when 55 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1878.
