Life#
Ahmet Şakir Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1842/43 (AH 1258) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army captain (yüzbaşı). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Ahmet Şakir began work in Istanbul in 1857/58, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 45 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1858/59, places Ahmet Şakir in Istanbul, the birthplace, as Mulazemet. Ahmet Şakir then moved to Gelibolu in 1859/60, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), then Keşan from 1860 to 1867. The annual lists then follow Ahmet Şakir to Elbasan in 1867/68, then Shkodër (İşkodra) from 1868 to 1878. The last posts were in Ioannina (Yanya) and Trabzon from 1878 to 1881 and Kosova in 1883/84. Few officials served in as many provinces; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
Pay rose from 45 kuruş a month in 1858/59 to a peak of 2,000 in 1880/81, as an inspector (Müfettiş) in Trabzon, when 93 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak was 44.4 times the first salary, a rise matched by 39 of the 2,859 officials paid for ten years or more. The last annual entry is for 1883/84. Ahmet Şakir received a rank (rütbe) and the Mecidi order.
