What the job was
Inspector (müfettiş) of the post and telegraph service. Inspectors watched over the offices and lines of a region, and the directors of the offices answered to them.
Duties
- travel to the offices and lines of a region and see that the service works regularly
- test telegraph lines and offices
- keep a journal of findings and actions
Rank and pay
Under the regulation of 1876 the inspectors of the provinces answered to the chief directors of posts and of telegraphs. In the registers the most frequent salary of an inspector was 2,000 kuruş a month up to the general reduction of 1897 and 1,800 kuruş after it.
History
At first only Europeans held the eight inspectorships of the telegraph. In 1877 settled inspectorships at the centre and travelling ones in the provinces were set up to test lines and offices; in 1880 they were abolished to save money and sergeant majors (başçavuş) took their place, until İzzet Efendi restored them less than a year later and asked for well-educated science inspectors (fen müfettişi).
