Life#
Yaşar Şazi Efendi was born in Niš (Niş) in 1853/54 (AH 1270), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Yaşar Şazi also wrote Turkish and had some knowledge of Bulgarian.
At about 22, in 1876/77, Yaşar Şazi began work in Skopje (Üsküp), with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1877/78, places Yaşar Şazi in Niš, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came five places in nine years, then a return to Malatya from 1887 to 1890. Yaşar Şazi then moved to five places in 11 years, with a rise to director of the first grade (1. Müdür) in 1894/95 and to inspector (Müfettiş) in 1895/96. The last posts were in Hudavendigar from 1901 to 1903. Few officials served in as many provinces; 24 of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
Pay rose from 500 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to a peak of 2,000 in 1895/96, as Müfettiş in Aydın, when 96 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 27 years of salary come to 346,200 kuruş, 2.1 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
