Life#
Mustafa Şükrü Efendi was born in Niš (Niş) in 1856/57 (AH 1273) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a farmer (çiftçi). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1872/73, Mustafa Şükrü began work in Niš, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1875/76, places Mustafa Şükrü in Travnik as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Mustafa Şükrü to six places in 13 years, from Bosna to Skopje (Üsküp), then Zagor from 1888 to 1896. The lists have no entry for 1878 to 1879. The last posts were in Leskovik from 1896 to 1898. Nine places on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service. Fewer than 10 per cent of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more kept one title throughout.
