Life#
This official was born in Niš (Niş) in 1857/58 (AH 1274) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
The official began work in Pristina (Priştine) in 1877/78, at about 19, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1882/83, with the official as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Izmir (İzmir). Next came Aleppo (Halep), Elassona (Alasonya) and Mersin from 1883 to 1890, then a return to Aleppo from 1890 to 1892. The lists have no entry for 1886 to 1889. The official then moved to Saimbeyli (Haçin), Yarpuz, Zor and Svilengrad (Cisr-i Mustafapaşa), four places in six years, then back to Aleppo from 1898 to 1900. The annual lists then follow the official to Idlib (İdlib) from 1900 to 1905. The last post was in As-Suwayda (Süveyda) in 1905/06. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to a peak of 600 in 1885/86, as Muhabere Memuru in Elassona, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 20 years the salaries add up to 123,600 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
