Life#
Ali Ulvi Efendi was born in Şebinkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Şarki) in 1857/58 (AH 1274) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Ali Ulvi began work in Karaman in 1883/84, at about 26, paid from the start, on 380 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1883/84, places Ali Ulvi in Karaman as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Kozan, Mudanya, Afyonkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Sahib) and Edirne, four places in eight years. From 1892 to 1905 every annual entry places Ali Ulvi in Nazımiye (Kızılkilise), with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to a peak of 600 in 1892/93, as 3. Müdür in Nazımiye, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 22 years the salaries add up to 137,100 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
