Life#
Born in Trabzon in 1860/61 (AH 1277), Hafız Hamdi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a ship's captain (kaptan). Hamdi had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Ünye in 1879/80, at about 19, paid from the start, on 140 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1879/80, places Hamdi in Ünye as an official (Memur), where the entries run to 1881/82. The annual lists then follow Hamdi to Terme from 1882 to 1890, then Hopa in 1890/91. Next came Fatsa from 1891 to 1905, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür). The last posts were in Gümüşhane from 1905 to 1907, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür).
The salary went from 140 kuruş a month in 1879/80 to 720 in 1905/06, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Gümüşhane, when three in four paid officials earned less. Over 28 years the salaries add up to 138,720 kuruş, 83 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
