Life#
Born in Çatalca in 1842/43 (AH 1258), Mehmet Cemal Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Mehmet Cemal had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 27, in 1869/70, Mehmet Cemal began work in Yenisehir, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1870/71, places Mehmet Cemal in Larissa (Yenişehir-i Fener) as a postal official (Posta Memuru). The lists have no entry for 1871 to 1873. Next came Thessaloniki in 1873/74, as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur), then a return to Larissa from 1874 to 1877. Mehmet Cemal then moved back to Çatalca, the birthplace, from 1877 to 1878, then Mitrovica in 1878/79. The annual lists then follow Mehmet Cemal to Elassona (Alasonya) from 1879 to 1886, then Korçë in 1886/87. From 1887 to 1905 the annual entries place Mehmet Cemal again in Elassona.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1870/71 to a peak of 600 in 1873/74, as Seyyar Memur in Thessaloniki, when 55 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 34 years of salary come to 202,560 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
