Life#
Born in Ürgüp in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community, Vasil Tritropolos Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Vasil Tritropolos had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi), and wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.
Work began in Konya in 1890/91, at about 17, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with Vasil Tritropolos as a deliverer (Müvezzi) in Konya. Next came Bitlis from 1897 to 1900, with a rise to official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in 1897/98. The last posts were in Elassona (Alasonya) from 1900 to 1904.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 540 in 1900/01, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Elassona, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
