Life#
Hasan Tahsin Efendi was born in Kurucaviran in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 21, in 1894/95, Hasan Tahsin began work in Kozkoy, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1896/97, places Hasan Tahsin in Kozkoy as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Hasan Tahsin to Elassona (Alasonya) from 1898 to 1903. The last posts were in Ioannina in 1903/04 and Bitola (Manastır) from 1904 to 1906.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to a peak of 280 in 1904/05, as Muhabere Memuru in Bitola, when 22 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, ten years of salary come to 26,520 kuruş, 45 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
