Life#
Born in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Abdülkerim Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Abdülkerim had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Thessaloniki in 1892/93, at about 19, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 600 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1894/95, places Abdülkerim in Bitola (Manastır) as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur), where the entries run to 1897/98. The last posts were in Serres (Siroz) and Thessaloniki from 1898 to 1901 and Edirne from 1901 to 1903.
The salary went from 600 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to 675 in 1898/99, the peak, as Seyyar Memur in Serres, when 76 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
