Life#
Ali Rıza Efendi was born in Kastamonu in 1859/60 (AH 1276) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Çerkeş in 1877/78, at about 17, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 600 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1882/83, with Ali Rıza as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Ioannina (Yanya). Next came Servia in 1888/89 and Conik in 1889/90. From 1890 to 1900 the annual entries place Ali Rıza in Bitola (Manastır).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 600 kuruş a month in 1882/83, as Muhabere Memuru in Ioannina, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 285 kuruş. Over 13 years pay ended below where it began, 350 kuruş against 600. In all, 13 years of salary come to 53,820 kuruş, 69 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1899/1900.
