Life#
Born in Trikala (Tırhala) in 1861/62 (AH 1278), Mehmet Niyazi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Mehmet Niyazi had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), wrote Turkish and spoke Greek (Rum), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 24, in 1885/86, Mehmet Niyazi began work in Thessaloniki (Selanik), with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1885/86, places Mehmet Niyazi in Neapoli (Nasliç) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Mehmet Niyazi to Korçë (Görice) from 1886 to 1891, then Skopje in 1891/92. Next came Bitola (Manastır) from 1892 to 1900, then Thessaloniki in 1900/01 and Skopje in 1901/02. Mehmet Niyazi then moved back to Thessaloniki from 1902 to 1904, with a rise to director of the first grade (1. Müdür). The last post was in Ioannina (Yanya) in 1904/05, with a rise to director (Müdür).
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to a peak of 1,650 in 1904/05, as Müdür in Ioannina, when 95 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 20 years of salary come to 187,140 kuruş, 1.6 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
