Life#
Salih Sabri Efendi was born in Trikala (Tırhala) in 1865/66 (AH 1282) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Salih Sabri also wrote Turkish and spoke Greek (Rum).
Work began in Manisa in 1905/06, at about 40, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Only 40 of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 40 or older. From the first annual entry, for 1906/07, to 1908/09, every annual entry places Salih Sabri in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Alaşehir.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Alaşehir, when one in four paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1908/09.
