Life

Yahya Kâzım Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1867/68 (AH 1284) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Topcu". Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).

At about 37, in 1904/05, Yahya Kâzım began work in Çanakkale, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 37 or older. Both annual entries, for 1906/07 and 1907/08, place Yahya Kâzım in Serres (Siroz) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Serres, when one in four paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
