Life#
Born in Izmir (İzmir) in 1886/87 (AH 1304), Jozef Fori Efendi came from the Jewish (Musevi) community. Schooling took nine years, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi).
Work began in Izmir in 1903/04, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1906/07, with Jozef Fori as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Beyoğlu. The last post was in Misir in 1908/09, with a rise to chief official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru).
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1906/07 to a peak of 1,000 in 1908/09, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru in Misir, when 78 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1908/09. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahval kayıtlarına göre İzmir doğumlu gayrimüslim memurlar" by SEDEF KUMSAR (2019) probably refers to Jozef Fori, since the name and the birthplace agree.
