Life#
Born in Peste in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Latin Catholic (Latin) community, Arnold Karnım Efendi was the child of a doctor (doktor). Arnold Karnım was taught by a private teacher. In all Arnold Karnım knew four languages, Bulgarian, French, Greek (Rum) and Italian, all in writing; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
At about 31, in 1904/05, Arnold Karnım began work in Beyoğlu, paid from the start, on 1,000 kuruş a month. Fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 31 or older. Every annual entry from 1904/05 to 1908/09 places Arnold Karnım in the same office, Tercume Odasi, in Beyoğlu.
