Life#
Born in Ürgüp in 1884/85 (AH 1302), Bekir Vefa Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a farmer (çiftçi). Bekir Vefa had 12 years of schooling, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul, attended the telegraph school as well, and wrote French as well as Turkish.
At about 19, in 1904/05, Bekir Vefa began work in Beyoğlu, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. From the first annual entry, for 1904/05, to 1907/08, every annual entry places Bekir Vefa in the same post, official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), in Beyoğlu.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1904/05 to 400 in 1905/06, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Beyoğlu, when 38 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
