Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1884/85 (AH 1302) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, İsmail Hakkı Efendi was the child of a customs official (rüsumat memuru). İsmail Hakkı had 12 years of schooling, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul, attended the telegraph school as well, wrote French as well as Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1903/04, at about 18, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. Both annual entries, for 1906/07 and 1907/08, place İsmail Hakkı in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a letters official (Mekâtib Memuru).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1906/07, as Mekâtib Memuru in Istanbul, when 39 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
