Life

Born in Istanbul in 1884/85 (AH 1302) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mustafa Sıtkı Efendi was the child of a mounted courier (tatar). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mustafa Sıtkı also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

At about 19, in 1904/05, Mustafa Sıtkı began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1906/07 and 1907/08, place Mustafa Sıtkı in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a letters official (Mekâtib Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 100 kuruş a month in 1906/07, as Mekâtib Memuru in Istanbul, when 2 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
