Abdullah Yaşar Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1885/86 (AH 1303), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "Kazganci". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Abdullah Yaşar also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

Work began in Istanbul in 1903/04, at about 17, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1906/07 and 1907/08, place Abdullah Yaşar in Istanbul, the birthplace, in the sorting room (Tefrik Odası).
