Life

Born in Istanbul in 1885/86 (AH 1303), Ali Saib Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (ketebe). Ali Saib had nine years of schooling, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi), wrote Armenian, French and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

Work began in Istanbul in 1906/07, at about 20, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 240 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1907/08 and 1908/09, place Ali Saib in Yalova as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 240 kuruş a month in 1907/08, as Muhabere Memuru in Yalova, when 28 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1908/09.
