Life#
Mehmet Ataullah Efendi was born in İzmit in 1885/86 (AH 1303) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a court official (mahkeme memuru). Schooling took nine years, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi); Mehmet Ataullah also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Mehmet Ataullah began work in İzmit in 1906/07, at about 20, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1907/08 and 1908/09, place Mehmet Ataullah in İzmit, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 200 kuruş a month in 1907/08, as Muhabere Memuru in İzmit, when 18 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1908/09.
