Life

Mehmet Raşit Efendi was born in İzmit in 1887/88 (AH 1305) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an accounts official (muhasebe memuru). Schooling took nine years, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi).

At about 17, in 1905/06, Mehmet Raşit began work in Üsküdar, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1909/10, places Mehmet Raşit in Ağva as a candidate official (Mülazım). The last posts were in Geyve in 1910/11 and Babi mesihat in 1911.

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 200 kuruş a month in 1909/10, as Mülazım in Ağva, when 7 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, three years of salary come to 7,200 kuruş, 41 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1911.
