Life

İsmail Ziya Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1887/88 (AH 1305) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a French school (Fransız Mektebi); İsmail Ziya also wrote French as well as Turkish.

At about 21, in 1909/10, İsmail Ziya began work in Beyoğlu, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1909/10, places İsmail Ziya in Beyoğlu as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). The last post was in Fener in 1911.

Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1909/10 to a peak of 300 in 1911, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Fener, when 7 per cent of paid officials earned less.
