Life#
Mehmet Şükrü Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1884/85 (AH 1302) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Mehmet Şükrü also attended the telegraph school and wrote French as well as Turkish.
Mehmet Şükrü began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1906/07, at about 21, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1906/07, places Mehmet Şükrü in Thessaloniki as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1908/09. The annual lists then follow Mehmet Şükrü to Kumkapı, Geyve and Mersin from 1909 to 1912, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru) in 1911/12. The last post was in Sehremaneti in 1912/13, with a rise to Mubassir.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1906/07 to 600 in 1912/13, the peak, as Mubassir in Sehremaneti, when fewer than 1 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1912/13. Mehmet Şükrü received a rank (rütbe).
